Serious problem with
A SIMPLE SOLUTION.

Lights Out! Wilmington
is dedicated to ending unnecessary avian mortality through a process of educating those who can solve the problem of migratory bird strikes. We believe that large building owners, managers, tenants – everyone – will be willing to help once they are made aware of how simple the solution is – and how much they can save in energy costs.

Every spring and fall, during periods when the birds are migrating along the Atlantic Flyway,
the simple act of turning off unnecessary exterior decorative lighting and interior perimeter
illumination in tall buildings on levels above the fourth floor between the hours of 10 p.m. and
dawn could save thousands – perhaps hundreds of thousands – of birds each year.

Here’s what building owners, managers and tenants can do:

Nighttime:
TURN OFF architectural exterior illumination and interior perimeter
lighting above the fourth floor between the hours of 10 p.m. to dawn.

IF TURNING OFF INTERIOR PERIMETER LIGHTING IS NOT AN
OPTION, close blinds and shades.

INSTALL MOTION DETECTORS/TIMERS that automatically turn off
interior lights when not in use.

Daytime:
MOVE INDOOR GREENERY away from all windows.

REDUCE REFLECTIVITY of glass with patterned film treatments.

CLOSE BLINDS AND SHADES to reduce tempting reflections of water
and sky, as well as illusions of safe passage.

Remember: Not only will you be saving lives of birds; you will be reducing energy costs and preserving the environment, too.
